Microplastic free

Lots of shower gels, exfoliants and make-up products are harmful to the environment. Why? Because they contain microplastic. This easily enters the bodies of marine creatures. If we then eat them, the microplastic can in turn get into the human organism. That is why RINGANA consistently avoids microplastic in all of its products.

#What is microplastic?

Microplastic refers to solid and insoluble plastics (polymers) that have a length of less than five millimetres. There are two kinds of microplastic: primary and secondary. Primary microplastic already measures less than five millimetres before it enters the environment. It includes exfoliating grains in skin care products, which are industrially manufactured especially for this purpose. Secondary microplastic refers to the minuscule pieces of plastic caused by the disintegration of a larger piece of plastic after it has been exposed to the elements. Microplastic attracts environmental toxins, is not biodegradable, and cannot be removed from the environment. Apart from all that, it is manufactured on the basis of mineral oil.

#How does microplastic get into the environment?

The main ways in which microplastic and other plastics get into the sea are local sewage systems and rainwater. Water treatment plants can only filter microplastic up to a point. What remains in the slurry afterwards is incinerated after processing or the slurry is poured on fields. This means that the microplastic which has been filtered with great effort out of sewage once again ends up on agricultural land.

Certified natural skin care products are not allowed to contain microplastic or any other ingredients derived from mineral oil. On principle, any plastics used in skin care products must be declared, but they are often concealed behind complicated technical names.
